PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Hive Alembic of Transformative Universalities

H.A.T.U. at the C.O.R.E.

HATU Effigy - CORE Burning Man 2011

Initial brainstorm sketch

The ground level of HATU is a gallery filled with the honey of art and creativity.  An 8ft tall octagonal gazebo closed on 7 sides with the 8th wall being the entrance and exit.  Decorative metal sconces framing each wall and the entrance will add plasma cut décor and structural support — thanks to Kevin Moore.

Gazebo frame complete! Metal sconce decor to be added...

Just outside the HATU gazebo entrance there will be a nested phoenix — created by Roy Dean and his crew — to welcome you to view the art of the seven rites of passage.

Five of the gazebo walls will feature 4×8 paintings by renowned Utah artists –  Sunny StrasburgMartin StrensaasXkotSpencer Barton ~ Raven Johnson — who bring their perspective on creation through paint and sculpture in both traditional and ‘faux’ art forms…

The Book — envisioned by Bobby Gittins — will contain a pictorial collection of all Utah art projects brought to playa over the years.  Email us today with your playa art project!

On top of the gazebo level is Hive Alembic, a 10ft Hive shaped Stupa, representing our Universe.  Gold fabric over chicken wire defines the beehive shape and gives the HATU a golden glow during daylight, as well as a bit of shelter from wind.  The seating area inside the Hive is accessible to the public via 8ft rope ladders constructed by Chris Coleman.  Pineapple crew will add plush atmosphere to this upper level with decor and comfortable seating.

Beehive level under construction

This beehive shaped sculpture glows from afar with artfully integrated LED lights that breathe life into the Hive as they move and change color.  Our amazing lighting team ledby Alice Bain and Dan Benson are constructing and programming custom LED art specific to this project.  There will also be lights directed to the paintings and sculpture, phoenix, book and other art brought by our community to take part in the CORE project.

At the 18ft peak, blazing a warm beacon to the HATU, the rotating Element 11 sign represents our Utah Regional Burn Event and the 11th Element Sodium– a connection to our roots in the City of Salt.  – created by “SugarBoy” Shane.

Lotus leaves created from metal tubing covered in fabric will surround the HATU.  Eight modular, free-standing petals highlighted with LED lights will completely encircle the gazebo level with the tips of the petals lit in gentle flame.  – created by “SugarBoy” Shane.

Lotus petal frames complete!

The structure is made primarily of 6×6 and 2×4 wood with some eco-plywood (non toxic glue etc) for flooring .  The Hive being encased in chicken wire gives the beehive shape and also helps contain ash and small debris during the burn.

All metal sconce frames, lights, glass work, lotus petals, art installations, and other decor will be removed and re-purposed prior to burning.
