March 10 Utah Regional BM Camp Meeting Notes
Wednesday, 11 March 2009

Beyond the Zion Curtain will be back on playa this year, officially. Last night many of us met at the C7G with representatives from E11/Utah Regional, 50 hrz Healerz, JellyFish 12,000, C7G, BRCCC, Euphoria and more. Everyone was very excited about the possibilities of what we can all do together. In the room was likely nearly 100 years of combined playa experience, many have been involved in large camps and have experience with Esplanade placement. All decisions were made by popular vote.

We discussed the resources that the Utah burn community can bring to the playa and voted on placement preferences. Basically we are imagining bringing Transformation to Evolution, but in a smaller space. Our camp will be limited to about 380 people, provided that people carpool and do not bring too many RVs and share resources.

The resources we can possibly bring to BM:

Ganesh, The Jellyfishmobile (maybe), Fire Stage, the Beehive, SOUND, Obelisk, the Solar Disc, the Zion Curtain, a radio station, Mister Tent, the Velvet Soul Mine, the world’s largest disco ball (provided we can get funding and a crane?), Terra’s Lotus (maybe), the Pink Spot (maybe),the fire dome, Bebops and Chef Daddys new art car, the BRCCC kitchen that can feed up to 300/day, and…of course our fire dancers, DJs and more.

Camps considerting being incorporated into Beyond the Zion Curtain: 50 hrz Healerz, The JellyFish 12,000, Euphoria, BRCCC and ?

Placement Choices: 1st choice, front corner of the 7:30 portal at Esplanade, 2nd Choice, between 7:30 and 9:00 on Esplanade, 3rd choice 2 and B in the “high noise” district…we are asking for an entire block.

Other things we talked about:

  • How all camps are “independent” but we may share some recourses, like perhaps power, porta potties, shade, evaporation systems and other infrastructure type things.
  • We planned for about 100 stragglers or independent campers, though we would like to have them register so we can get them a spot, RVs MUST register in advance and placement will be limited.
  • The large BRCCC kitchen is looking feed about 200+/day, they also have a large structure, hot/cold water, stoves, freezers, refrigerators, a large generator, a large evaporator and more, they are interested in working with members of the Zion Curtain camp.
  • Noise, LNT and parking issues.

In the works:

  • Terra is putting together a possible “map” of the camp
  • The application will be sent in within the next week or two (by the end of March)
  • BRCCC is working with Utah camps to figure out the kitchen possibilities
  • An online network will be formed either with Google Groups or a site like Ning to coordinate camp plans.
  • Tentative next meeting, March 23rd
  • Theme Camps: Please come to the next meeting prepared to give Terra a schedule of entertainment – we need to demonstrate to Burning Man that we will have 24 hrs interactivity – as a Village, each camp can contribute to some of this – please be prepared to talk about your part. J

Well, it was a great meeting, decisions were made and we are definitely on our way to a popular BM camp. If you are a Utah Theme camp interested in applying with us to help us with placement please contact Terra at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Utah BM Village
Monday, 23 February 2009
Re-posted from Chris:

Hi All-
This was mentioned at last month's community burn meeting, and I haven't had a chance to put out a newsletter yet, but I just wanted to get this info out to people:

If you are interested in participating in a Utah collective/collaborative "village" at Burning Man this year, there will be a meeting at the City of Seven Gates (C7G) art space on Tuesday March 10th at 7PM to discuss and plan this.

Many of you may have participated in, or heard about the "Beyond the Zion Curtain" village at Burning Man in 2005. The ideas behind this year's effort are similar, but of course will be different because "it's always better next year!" Beyond that, it's still a creation in process, so if you're interested in helping to create it, this would be the time and place to show up.

C7G is located on 5th South, on the west side of town (SLC) at 2904 West. Park in the lots, BYOC (bring your own cup) and LNT (leave no trace).

If you want more info, or want to be put on the list to be informed about any updates, decisions and/or volunteer opportunities for this project, contact Terra at kallisti_dawn@yahoo.com
