Theme Idea Winner – Traci Mortrud

What inspired your theme idea submission?

I love science fiction and the cyberpunk worlds. Because sci-fi is so vast, anything we think about how the future develops can become a reality. One of my favorite festivals is a cyberpunk/sci-fi fest with quests and immersive experiences. Everyone creates a character and reflects that in their costuming and interactions. I want to bring that spirit to E11 and challenge the idea of what a festival is.

If your theme had a soundtrack, what songs would be on it and why?

This is a tough question, as there is so much great music out there. Do the Astral Plane by Flying Lotus, Leave the Atmosphere by Mindseye and Dr. Rinkel, To the Moon – ’22 Remix by Late Night Radio, Stardust Redux – Perkulat0r Remix by Minnesota and Perkulat0r, and Universe by Krister and MelyJones. All the titles are related to space, and I feel like these are tracks I’d blast in my spaceship.

What’s something unexpected you’ve learned through your involvement with E11?

I came to Salt Lake City under terrible circumstances, and my ideas about the people were that they were very religious and closed off. I knew Burning Man had more open-minded individuals, so I decided to take a chance at E11. I had no idea I would love Salt Lake City and its community so much. I’ve lived in a few places, but they have never felt like home. I truly believe I found my group of weirdos in this oddly religious landscape, and I’d be hard-pressed to leave them. E11 taught me to be slightly more open in places I assume to be religious because you never know what you’ll find.

What first drew you to Burning Man and/or Element 11, and how many times have you been to E11 and/or Burning Man?

I went to the big burn in 2014 and 2015. I heard wild stories from my friends who work gate about their experiences, and I also wanted to experience the magic and wonder. For E11, I went in 2021. I was fresh in Utah and didn’t know anyone, so I decided to go to E11 alone. I met so many people with Topher’s and Mike Silva’s help.

What is your most memorable moment at E11?

A memory that is always in the forefront of my mind when I think of E11 is a meet-cute I had with someone who is now one of my best friends. Mike Silva asked me if I knew how to braid hair, and I replied that I did. He brought me over to The Alchemists camp and introduced me to Shanna Futral. I sat in her van while I braided her hair while we got to know each other. Shanna has been one of the greatest gifts that Salt Lake has given me. I don’t know what I would do without her. Her kindness and friendship emanates from her as the sun radiates warmth.

How are you going to interpret this year’s theme at the event?

I created many costumes for my favorite sci-fi fest, and I will be showcasing them all there. I’m also creating a demolition derby with RC cars called Furry Fury. Furry Furry will have some RC cars resembling art cars from E11, with some of the arena obstacles resembling different elements of E11. I’m excited to play with everyone. I think RC cars are a great way to bring some tech to the fest. They’re simple and fun.

What is your favorite principle and why?

My favorite principle is Communal Effort. Without the hard work and effort of everyone involved, we wouldn’t have a festival at all. With all that’s happening in the world, our community is all we have. We as individuals cannot make it on our own, we need community to improve our lives and survive as a species.

What are you passionate about?

I am very passionate about education and healthcare. I am a nurse, and it is our duty to give patients all the information necessary to make an informed and autonomous decision. In early March, I’m hosting a psychedelic conference in West Jordan for the public to learn, grow, and connect with their local practitioners.
